TURKISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE RESEARCH AND APPLICATION CENTER TÖMER (ANKARA ÜNİVERSİTESİ TÜRKÇE VE YABANCI DİL ARAŞTIRMA VE UYGULAMA MERKEZİ TÖMER)
The institution is affiliated to Ankara University and is a Turkish and Foreign Language Research and Application Centre.
For the institution are working (in total) 540 persons of which 348 are academic staff. The average number of students attending courses in all branches of the Institution is around 57.000. For our project will work five persons from the Institution’s full time staff.
EXPERIENCE: The institution has been teaching 20 foreign languages, including German and Turkish as a foreign language, for 20 years. The Institution has a Head office and 11 branches in 8 different cities of Turkey and is in close contact with Ankara University Faculty of Letters that is the biggest and most experienced faculty in Turkey to teach foreign languages and cultures. Also, the Institution is organising language courses for teachers teaching Turkish as foreign language and the Turkish studies are carried on in cooperation with hundreds of Turkology institutions in 111 countries in the world.
The institution has published a modern set for Turkish as a foreign language called “HITIT Turkish Language Teaching Set” including three separate sets for elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Each one of them is composed of a course book, a workbook, two audio-cassettes, a Turkish-English glossary and a Turkish-German glossary. 25.000 copies of this set have been sold all around the world so far.
Furthermore, the institution has participated to a project aiming to teach Turkish via Internet called “Distance Turkish Learning Center” (www.turkish-center.com) in cooperation with a Turkish institution Mobilsoft. TÖMER has provided all the educational support.
The institution, since 2004, is also involved in European Commission’s Education and Culture Programs. Currently, TÖMER is running partnerships in Leonardo and Lingua projects.
TÖMER is the only Institution in Turkey authorized to issue European Language Portfolio (ELP) for adults prepared according to the Common European Framework of Reference having the accreditation number 56-2004. Also, the institution publishes two periodicals “Language Journal” and “Mother Tongue Journal”.
